TerryD - I think you're right that ONLY a Conference Champs Only

Playoff system would force ND's hand.

And many hate to admit it, but ND still has tremendous pull in the college football world. A Conference Champs Only playoff system COULD likely be supported by the B1G and SEC, but the ACC might vote against it because of the fear of breaching the ACC-ND contract and losing ND altogether. The PAC probably has USC and Stanford in ND's corner and you never know about those guys. So, it may take decades before the P65 can agree on a Conference Champs Only setup.

And going back to the B1G and SEC, a Conference Champs setup may fall on the deaf ears of their leaders, as they can quickly cite Bama's Natty over LSU when Bama didn't win their conference; and you only have to look back to last year with the B1G's PSU-OSU debacle.

So I have a gut feeling ND will play puppetmaster with the college heavy-weights when the time comes for a conference champs only deal. In other words, I can definitely see ND remaining independent for a long time.
